A Product Recall Inquiry Response Playbook

Published September 6, 2026.

Treat a possible recall as a safety matter. Identify the product, model, serial or lot information, purchase channel, and customer location. Check the current official recall notice and internal safety guidance rather than relying on memory or a search snippet.

Lead with the approved safety action

Tell the customer whether the identifier is in scope and provide the exact stop-use, storage, disposal, return, or repair instruction from the authorized notice. Do not ask the customer to test a potentially unsafe item.

Then explain the remedy, required evidence, shipping restrictions, and next checkpoint. Escalate injuries, smoke, fire, contamination, or uncertainty through the urgent safety route and preserve the customer's wording.

Review identification errors, time to safety guidance, abandoned claims, and repeated questions. A recall workflow succeeds when customers can act safely and obtain the stated remedy without avoidable handoffs.

Support the route with product question routing and urgent escalation procedures. Always verify notices in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall database.
